The entrance to the library is through the first-floor lobby. The library provides services in three floors, mainly in the second, which may be accessed by lift or stairs.
In addition to the desktops for library users, the library supports the use of laptops. Customers can access the Internet with the help of the wireless network Aalto open. Aalto Open is open to everyone, so no username or password is needed.
You can access the electronic resources of the library via Aalto open as if by remote use which means you have to have an account and a password of the IT Services. Customers outside of the Aalto University School of Science and Technology can use the electronic resources only with the open work stations of the library.
The School of Science and Technology students and staff can also access the Internet via the Ethernet wall sockets near the windows on the second floor. Via the sockets you can only get to the old Aalto network which requires an account and a password of the IT Services.
You can borrow network cables with your library card and use the wall sockets to charge the laptop batteries.
Reading roomsThe main reading room has plenty of tables and chairs for studying and research; in addition, in the first and ground floors, there are quiet working spaces with tables and chairs; they can be reached either by stairs or a lift.
There are four rooms reserved for group study on the second floor, each with room for approximately six people at a time. They can be reserved online through the reservation system.
The reservation system enables users to make and cancel reservations without registration: the reservation is made under the user’s name and email address. The system is freely available from everywhere on the internet. Registration as a library user is not required.
Since the rooms are intended primarily for group work, reservations for only one person may be cancelled by the library staff if the room is needed for a group.
In the second floor, next to the small reading room, there is the collection of the reading-room copies of course books and a couple of seats for reading.
In the first-floor lobby, there is a lecture room, toilets, coffee machine, notice boards, coat racks and lockers.
In addition, the most recent issues of Helsingin Sanomat and Hufvudstadsbladet are found in the lobby, where they should also be read.
The lecture hall of the first-floor lobby can be reserved for various events beforehand at the customer service counter, p. (09) 470 24111. It seats approximately 35 people and has a computer connected to the School of Science and Technology network as well as a video projector.
