Magnetic keys

The library loans magnetic keys to students and employees of the Aalto University which grant access to facilities of the university outside regular opening hours.

Magnetic keys are loaned to the following departments and faculties:

  • Department of Architecture
  • Department of Automation and Systems Technology
  • Design Factory
  • Faculty of Electronics, Communications and Automation (ETA)
  • Department of Forest Products Technology
  • Department of Computer Science and Engineering
  • Department of Industrial Engineering and Management

A magnetic key can only be borrowed to the department in which the client is studying and which is printed on the client's student card. To borrow a key to Design Factory requires a permission granted by the laboratory engineer. The loan period for magnetic keys is one term, except for Design Factory the loan period is defined in the permission.

If a magnetic key loan is not returned or renewed in time, the key will be deactivated. Loans of the keys are listed in the client's library account just like other borrowed library items, and the same borrowing policy is applied to them. The keys can be renewed 10 times.

When borrowing a magnetic key the client has to sign an agreement that the client commits to comply with the terms of use for magnetic keys. If a key is lost the client has to pay a fee of €15. If a key is overdue more than 50 days the fee is charged by collection agency, and in that case the client must pay additional collection fees. By notifying immediately about a lost key the customer can limit his/her responsibility in case the key ends up in wrong hands.
