Linking to licensed resources

Many publishers do not allow for downloaded resources, such as academic papers, to be uploaded to eg. course webpages or teaching portals for students to use. The correct way is to link to the resource so no licenses are violated and all use is recorded for statistics. In order for the link to work also in remote use, it is recommended that you link to the SFX-window of the paper, which in remote use takes the user first to an Aalto login page and only then to the resource. The URLs of the SFX-windows are long but you can use the Bib.fi short link service to make them easier to handle.

Opening the paper’s SFX window:

The SFX window for the paper in question can be opened by clicking the SFX button in search results (if the paper is found with a Nelli search) or by using the CitationLinker tool in the e-journals page. The bibliographic information of the paper is entered into the CitationLinker form and pressing GO opens the SFX-window.

Creating the short link:

Open the ’More Options’ list from the bottom of the SFX window and select  ’Create short link: Bib.fi short link service’ by pressing GO. This opens a new window (currently only in Finnish), which has the original address to the SFX-window (Alkuperäinen osoite), the short link (Lyhytlinkki) and a global short link (Globaali lyhytlinkki). Select the short link if it is to be used only by members of Aalto University.

How the short link functions:

As a student clicks on the short link they are directed to the SFX-window for that particular paper. If they are in the university network pressing Go on the selected full-text service will take them directly to the article in question with access to fulltext. If they are outside the network they are directed to Aalto login after which they are directed to the service with remote access to the fulltext.
