INIS introduction

INIS, the International Nuclear Information System, is the world’s leading information system on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

INIS Subject areas of INIS are:

  • nuclear technology and nuclear power plants
  • nuclear energy
  • nuclear fuel cycle, radioactive waste management and disposal
  • safety issues
  • radionuclides, radiotracers and radiochemistry
  • radiation effects on living organisms and biological materials
  • radiology and nuclear medicine
  • radioactivity in the environment, transport of radioactive substances in nature
  • radiation sources, radiation protection and dosimetry
  • radiation monitoring
  • regulations, legislation and safequards
  • nuclear and particle physics
  • plasma physics and fusion technology

INIS database has been now opened to all Internet users around the world. Free, open and unrestricted access is available at: http://inisdb.iaea.org/inis/php/.

INIS is operated by the INIS and Knowledge Management Section of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with 122 IAEA member states and 24 international organizations (ie. OECD/NEA, CERN, EU, ICRP, FAO, ICSTI, ISO).

Production of the database started in 1970. You can find old information related to nuclear science from the Nuclear Science Abstracts (NSA) database which covers the years 1948–1976. NSA is available at: http://www.osti.gov/inisnsaview/.

Contents of INIS database can also be found via ETDEWEB World Base Energy database.

INIS consists of:

  • over 3 million bibliographic records
  • over 200 000 full-text documents (reports, conference publications, dissertations etc.)
  • hundreds of thousands links to research reports and academic journals in the web

The Aalto University Library, Otaniemi takes care of storing nuclear energy related data into INIS of such sources that have been published in Finland.
